This week i am very excited to be reviewing a new book by Bianca Schulze, founder of The Children's Book Review website.
101 Books to Read Before You Grow Up is the sort of book I would have loved to have access to when I taught as a secondary school teacher. Bianca brings to bear her extensive knowledge of literature, to present a curated list that considers the interests and inclinations of young readers as well as the needs and desires of parents, educators, and the children's book industry. The volume features a quick, easy and accessible summary of each book listed, but also includes a number of interactive features such as space for readers to make notes, give ratings, and keep track of their reading progress. It also provides fun facts and further reading recommendations. An added bonus is the pull-out poster, featuring cartoon renditions of some of the best-loved characters in literature - a boon for any classroom.
The curated selections include old classics such as The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe and The Hobbit, but also newer and more challenging selections such as The Graveyard Book, El Deafo, and A Long Walk to Water. Selections are organized by recommended reading age, although an additional list at the back of the book allows readers to select texts by genre as well. Inclusive, challenging, and accessible, this volume would make a wonderful gift, an inspiring classroom tool, and a fantastic family reading project. I can't wait until my own boys are old enough to make use of it! Thank you, Bianca!
